I went to a reading by Amanda Jernigan 2 years ago and was blown away by her poetry, so I finally took the time to reread them and once again I was amazed. Jernigan builds a context in which compression can thrive; Banks builds sentences that reflect the connections the associative mind sees in its subjects. Yes, I did study archaeology. Amanda Jernigan writes poems that make your brain fizz with their rhetorical flourish, the chops amadna changes of her lines, their dense, active language, their allusiveness, and their brawny intelligence. But a poet’s job is probably to pay as little attention as possible to such things, and to continue to follow her instincts in as unselfconscious a way as possible.
Each section is an attempt to see or reimagine what was left out either by the passing of time or in the kernigan telling. But, I am reassured, there is a factory upstream to replicate the bird.
